OYA Solar Obtains Geneva Housing Authority As A Community Solar Subscriber

Six properties are assigned to OYA’s solar project State Route 122 bringing equitable access to solar energy for low-to-moderate-income (LMI) communities

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York, NY: April 21, 2022 – Today, OYA Solar announced that it has subscribed Geneva Housing Authority, along with six of its not-for-profit affiliated establishments across New York state, to State Route 122, a 6.8 MWDC solar farm that is owned and operated by OYA.

The Geneva Housing Authority (GHA) is a government-sponsored subsidized housing program that provides assistance programs for LMI residents. This subscription of 1.2 million kWh will produce approximately $9,000 in savings annually or the equivalent of powering 1,188 homes. Over the course of 25 years, savings amount to approximately $240,000.

“When it comes to the clean energy transition, we are prioritizing equity and inclusion,” says Manish Nayar, Founder and CEO at OYA Solar. “We’re committed to helping New York tackle climate change while reducing energy costs via community solar for those who need it most. New York is a leader in developing innovative policies to help realize the goals of an equitable clean energy future.”

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Tyman indicated that, “Despite funding and logistical challenges, public housing authorities are pursuing solar power to save money, create resiliency, and meet broader environmental and social goals. The authority continues to expand on their reduction of greenhouse gas production by moving forward with solar energy projects.”

Historically, the benefits of solar have been largely accessed by households and companies that own their properties and have high credit ratings. Community solar provides an opportunity for all households and companies, with or without a rooftop, to receive savings on utility bills while also being environmentally responsible. OYA is proud to collaborate with GHA to support their clean energy goals.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) provided nearly $1.7 million for this project through its NY-Sun program, the State’s signature $1.8 billion initiative to advance the scale-up of solar while driving costs down and making solar energy more accessible to homes, businesses, and communities. The project advances New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act goal to generate 70 percent of the state’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
